How long until we can go off grid?

Rules vary widely across the world. For a couple years growing up we didn’t have water or sewer from the city/town/county/etc. We were too far out and had a well and septic. The utility companies didn’t care to invest as it wouldn’t have been worth it.

But if it’s convenient/profitable for them then you don’t get to cut the cable. Which is BS.

How far are we from everyone that wants to produce/store/maintain their own energy being able to do so without paying the utility a penny?

I would’ve added batteries on to my install and told the power company to take a hike If I could. But since I can’t tell them to take a hike and I have net metering then I’m stuck complaining on Reddit.
